Jasper Morris 2022 Review
White

2022, Pernand-Vergelesses Sous Frétille 1er Cru

East facing. Three barrels, one of them new. This has an excellent tightly wound tension to it, all in white fruit, just the right acidity, and barely any sign of the oak. More clearly Pernand-Vergelesses than Pierre Meurgey’s wine from the same vineyard. Drink from 2026-2030. Tasted: October 2023. 90-92 pts

2022, Beaune Les Reversées 1er Cru

Originally there was pinot as well as chardonnay planted here, but all has been converted to white. 60% has been made in tank, 40% in a new 600 litre barrel. Pale lemon colour. Quite a reductive nose which dominates the oak. White fruit on the palate, rather attractive, then the reduction adds a tight smoky stony finish. There is enough fruit through the middle to fill out the palate. Drink from 2026-2030. Tasted: October 2023. 90-93 pts

2022, Meursault Les Vignes Blanches

New in 2022, from old vines low on the slope. Mid yellow, softly oaky from the mix of normal oak and 450 litre barrels. The fruit starts out quite soft with a ripe plum and lemon scented fruit, then a little less marked behind. Medium length. Drink from 2027-2032. Tasted: October 2023. 88-90 pts

2022, Meursault Charmes 1er Cru

New in 2022. 65 year old vines, enough to make three barrels of which one is new. Fairly oaky but also with a dense concentrated fruit. A lime intensity, with considerable weight, does not yet quite flow through, but this is the style of the Domaine, wanting to make tightly wound wines. Drink from 2028-2034. Tasted: October 2023. 91-93 pts

2022, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

From En Charlemagne, ex Domaine Laleure Piot. A healthy crop, the last picked on 3rd September, with six barrels made, two of them new wood. A powerful incisive white fruit bouquet, with oak showing in the little coconut notes behind. Lemon scented minerals to finish. At this stage a little hard to see into the complete wine, but I think there is plenty here for a long-term future. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023. 92-95 pts

Red

2022, Beaune Les Teurons 1er Cru

Old vines representing 40%, from a plot adjacent to Grèves. The rest is being replanted. Two barrels made. Rich purple, fresh at the edges. A substantial weighty fruit, plums and dark raspberry. Quite firm, a little touch of coconut, some tannins but this should come out well to make a concentrated long-term wine. Drink from 2028-2036. Tasted: October 2023. 90-92 pts

2022, Beaune Champs Pimont 1er Cru

Rich deep black purple. Very little nose is emerging at this stage from an obviously concentrated wine. On the heavy side on the palate, dark fruit, fills the palate all the way through, but could be livelier. Drink from 2028-2035. Tasted: October 2023.89-91 pts

2022, Volnay En Carelle 1er Cru

A bright even and deep purple. There is some life to the fruit but not as vibrant as one would like. Darker berries on the palate through the middle, fairly firm tannins. Did this vineyard suffer from the heat and drought? For what ever reason I am not seeing the elegance of Volnay at this stage. Tasted: October 2023. 86-90 pts

2022, Volnay Santenots-du-Milieu 1er Cru A fine and lively purple. The nose suggests an exciting quality without giving detail yet. Excellent intensity, as befits Santenots-du-Milieu, all in a vivid dark raspberry fruit, good acidity and persistent. Very promising and needs a lot more elevage. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: October 2023. 91-94 pts

2022, Volnay 1er Cru

The young vines of Taillepieds, not ready to go into the main wine. In future years there will be other young vines from different 1ers Crus. A rich heady purple, with an inky note to the nose. Almost over the top though the structure just about keeps it in balance. The youth of the vines shows in the lack of hinterland. Nonetheless this has some of the Taillepieds limestone character. Drink from 2028-2033. Tasted: October 2023. 89-91 pts

2022, Volnay Taillepieds 1er Cru

Made just from the old vines, 85 years. Black colour with a purple rim. Something of blackstrap on the nose, at first seeming to lack the vivacity. A vast heady mouthful but in fact it does have proper energy at the heart. There is a slight reduction and the tannins are too brawny at the moment, but then the quality Taillepieds fruit comes swooping back. It will calm down with time and it may even get a barrel of the younger vines added if that improves the blend. I think this is going to be a terrific wine. Stick my neck out. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023. 93-95 pts

2022, Volnay Clos de la Chapelle 1er Cru, Domaine Clos de la Chapelle

A lightly purple in colour, with fresher dark red berries on the nose. There is a graceful sense of harmony to this wine which fills out the middle of the palate very nicely. Strawberries and ripe raspberries, with a structure built on fine-grained tannins and just enough acidity. Drink from 2029-2037. 92-95 pts.

purple, exciting and dense. Three barrels a2de from 0.15ha. This is remarkably sensual 2022, Pommard Rue au Port

New in 2022. The oldest vines are 100 years. Deep purple, exciting and dense. Three barrels made from 0.15ha. This is remarkably sensual, with excellent balance and a very well-judged use of oak. The aftertaste comes singing back unlike for some of the heavier wines. Really a very good finish. Drink from 2029-2036. Tasted October 2023. 91-94 pts

2022, Pommard Les Chanlins Vieilles Vignes 1er Cru

95+ year old vines, which they use to take cuttings for selection massale. Bright purple. The nose is backward. There is a clean, clear-cut fruit, good acidity, the style shows the hillside location, the intensity shows the age of the vines. A fine backbone. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: October 2023. 92-94 pts

2022, Pommard Les Grands Epenots 1er Cru

The holding is located close to the Clos des Epeneaux. Dense purple, with a slightly raisiny note, almost too much of a good thing. Very small berries apparently. Tightly wound and the tannins are showing. Not quite the perfect balance. Low pH here though, please note, so this should come right with time. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023. 89-93 pts

2022, Corton Bressandes Grand Cru, Domaine Clos de la Chapelle

A normal yield here. A fine open mid purple with some charm. The nose is really quite elegant, and indeed Bressandes should deliver that style of Corton. Not the most intense, but I don’t mind that in 2022. Harmonious and balanced, with good acidity. Drink from 2029-2038. Tasted: October 2023. 92-94 pts
