2012 Volnay "En Carelle": (from a .35 ha parcel that produced only one barrel in 2012). There are hints of menthol to the broad ranging nose that includes notes of violet, plum, earth and oak nuances. The supple and very round medium-bodied flavors possess a dusty and palate coating finish that displays a hint of youthful asperity as well as enough wood to notice. This is a relatively big wine in the context of what is typical for the appellation and this too could be approached young. Score 89 / 2017+
2012 Volnay "Clos de la Chapelle": (a .55 ha monopole that produced only 1.5 barrels). An ultra-pure nose of kirsch, cherry, spice and a whiff of toast introduce beautifully detailed and mineral-driven middle weight flavors that also possess a silky mouth feel. There is better phenolic maturity to the supporting tannins and overall this is a classic Chapelle of lace and delicacy. While this could also be enjoyed young I would be inclined to give it at least a few years of cellar time as the wood has not yet fully integrated at this early juncture. Score 91 / 2018+
2012 Pommard "Les Chanlins Vieilles Vignes": (from a .25 ha parcel that produced 1 barrel). Here the wood is no longer subtle, indeed it's generous and fights a bit with the ripe aromas of menthol, plum, black currant and violets. There is excellent volume and fine intensity to the overtly mineral-inflected flavors that culminate in a mildly astringent finish that detracts somewhat from the overall sense of balance and harmony. My estimated drinking window offers the benefit of the doubt but I suspect that this will always be more enjoyable with the proper foods. Score 87-89 / 2019+
